Truffle hunting means living a unique experience with a local hunter and his inseparable dog through the charming woods scattered around the UNESCO hills of Langhe. Diwine Tour will take care of making it possible.
Truffle hunting: unique experience of its kind
If you are looking for a fun and educational experience and wish to spend few hours in contact with such an unspoiled nature, truffle hunting in Langhe is then the activity for you. The stunning hills of Piedmont are just perfect for all truffle lovers who wish to go hunt in the woods with the hope of finding the real protagonist of the International White Truffle Fair of Alba, on stage every year in October and November. Diwine Tour provides the expertise of a real “Trifulau” (truffle hunter) and his dogs, thanks to whom you will discover the secrets behind the scenes and few tricks to find the best.
Let us go truffle hunting
First, you will receive all the instructions to reach the designated natural wood of Langhe where the truffle hunting will take place. Once there, you will meet the hunter, his dog and you will start the activity with a short briefing. The hunter will satisfy your curiosity and explain everything behind the complex world of truffles, from the ecosystem where it grows to the training techniques reserved to truffle dogs. In addition, you will learn how to recognize the typologies of truffle and how to use them in your kitchen. Thank to this experience you will certainly understand the reasons why truffle hunting is deeply rooted into the tradition of Langhe and why truffle is strongly protected by the locals. All you need to go truffle hunting is suitable shoes to walk in woods. Diwine Tour will provide boots if the soil gets particularly muddy by previous rain and torches if you opt for the night truffle hunt. This activity cannot take place in adverse weather conditions.
Day or night truffle hunt? Choice is yours
So, how does it all work? In order to grant a complete truffle hunting experience, the hunter will hide one truffle before the start. Not knowing its exact position the dog will have to trust his nose to find it, as for a real hunt. Often the truffles found during a day hunt are a bit more than just one, especially in season! Once we reach the wood the dog will start following the traces, trusting his nose until it will discover the right spot. After a lively digging, you may try to get it out the soil and smell it first! In alternative, you can try your luck with a night hunt a longer experience but the actual finding of the truffle cannot be granted. For this, you will need good physical conditions though. It lasts around 3 hours and it will be scheduled either around dawn or late at night with the help of good torches that Diwine Tour will provide. Going truffle hunting at night is always a surprise since finding truffles is not as granted, as fun would be.
