Monferrato wineries to visit
The underground cathedrals of Coppo and Contratto
If you have had the chance to admire the wine landscapes of Piedmont, it will certainly not surprise you to know that in 2014 these have become part of Unesco World Heritage Sites. Besides boasting an extraordinary natural beauty, these lands, which include Langhe, Roero and Monferrato, are very famous for the excellence of native wines. Today we will focus on the area of the Monferrato, full of wineries that are worth visiting.
Coppo winery
The historical Coppo winey in Monferrato was built in the late 18th century and went through a process or renovation and expansion to become what they are today. The so-called "Underground Cathedrals" extend over 5,000 square meters and have a depth of up to 40 meters. Located at the foot of the hill of Canelli, Coppo cellars are made of a multitude of tunnels, corridors, galleries and vaults highlighted by a refined play of lights. However, the excellence of Coppo wines is due to the presence of Canelli's tuff stone, which proves to be a perfect thermal insulator, able to maintain a constant humidity and a temperature between 12 and 14 degrees, perfect to preserve all the organoleptic properties of the wine.
Contratto winery
Contratto winery has deserved to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as well. Its elegant and historic wine cellar, a masterpiece of the Liberty style, is a fascinating setting in which you can taste the best labels – the cellars initially produced Moscato and red wines, then they expanded the offer with Sparkling Classical Method, Vermouth and Tonics. Tasting the wines of this winery, located 5000 square meters underground, excavated in marl, leads to a unique experience, able to conquer the senses.
